Healthy Substitutes for Mayo

I’ve been eating healthy since November 2009 when I first started my fitness journey.  Since changing my eating habits, I’m constantly in search of healthier ways to enjoy the foods I love.   Here are some substitutes for mayo I’ve made that help me stay fit and healthy while enjoying my favorite foods.

Plain Yogurt – When making tuna, chicken or shrimp salad, use 1 part low fat mayo and 1 part fat free plain yogurt. You still get the taste and creaminess of mayo with half the fat and calories.

Hummus –  I’ve grown to love hummus and experiment with all the different varieties on the market.  Hummus is made from chickpeas which are high in fiber and protein and is a tasty and healthy alternative to mayo.  It’s become a staple in my diet in place of mayo for sandwiches, wraps and bagels, and as a healthy dip for raw veggies or whole grain crackers.

Make your own hummus:

  • 1 can chickpeas
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 3 Tbsp. tahini
  • Salt to taste

Put first four ingredients in a food processor or blender and mix until chickpeas are mashed. Then add tahini and mix again for about a minute.  Spread and enjoy!
